Baby Girl Doesn't Like Lullabies

I should have expected that my baby girl would have an eclectic music taste. Her Daddy and I are both singers and enjoy music way before our own era. Mostly of the soul, funk and disco genre and we listened to lots of this when I was pregnant.

When baby girl was a newborn she used to fight sleep a lot and would take some time to settle. Until we learnt the magic trick. We would put some of our favourite songs on, give her a bit of a rock and she would be out like a light, normally before the end of the song - sometimes within the first 30 seconds if we were really lucky.

To this day, this is how we put her to sleep, every day time nap and in the evenings.

The bizarre thing is that a lot of her favourite tunes have a heavy bass line and fast beat. J and I often joke and wonder how this will affect her later in life when she's at a party and perhaps she will be curled up in the corner fast asleep while the music is blaring.

As well as putting her to sleep, music just makes her generally happy. Content. The magical power of music can stop our darling princess from crying and it lifts her mood instantly. She's even mastered the art of singing (sure the words aren't there but there is definitely a tune) and dancing... and head bobbing.

It's adorable that our baby girl likes music just as much as we do.

Her top 5 favourite songs are -
  • Groove Is In The Heart - Deee-Lite
  • The Love I Lost - Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes
  • Happy - Pharell Williams
  • Uptown Funk - Mark Ronson and Bruno Mars
  • If Only For One Night - Luther Vandros
The last one we particularly love to sing to her in our best voices pretending we're on X factor. In that moment she is the most important audience my husband and I have ever had and we put every inch of our soul into our performance.

If we try and play any traditional lullabies she just cries until we put her tunes. This girl know what's up! Thank goodness for our Sonos speaker and Spotify account that provide us with instant music to fill the house with little to no notice.

Last weekend J and I had a gig. We are not in a band at the moment but we were both asked to front for a funk band because their regular singer couldn't make it. There was a whole set list of funk songs we had to learn. Baby girl was absolutely in her element watching us practice.

This was a Sunday afternoon gig at a lovely venue in Eltham, outer London called Tudor Barn so baby girl could come along. Her first gig at 9 months of age. That's our girl! The gig went fantastically and was a fun day for all the family. They have live music every Sunday afternoon in summer every year so if you ever the chance to check it out - do!

So there was our little funk star, not napped all day and having too much fun partying. As soon as we got home, I got her in the door, gave her bedtime milk, rocked her to Groove Is In The Heart and she was out like a light.

Baby girl may not like lullabies but she sure does have the music in her.

    1. Haha it's true. Bad time is always fun. Except for the odd time that you've listened to uptown funk 20 times, it's 10.30 and sleep is being fought! X

  2. This is super cute, when my daughter was around 2 months she would get really happy when listening to Miley Cyrus, not the best taste, but I found it hilarious. Your daughter has impeccable taste in music! She is lucky to have wonderful influences!

  3. So cute! I wish LBO had the same reaction to music but it definitely doesn't send him off to la la land - if only! He does love Uptown Funk though, even with my atrocious singing. Sounds like she is going to be a lucky girl with getting to go to gigs!

  6. My daughter also doesn't like lullabies. From the get-go, she has never liked them. When she's in the mood she focuses to figure out what I'm saying, possibly what the song is about, but putting her to sleep? No way. Heavy Metal, Trance, Country, Dubstep? One happy baby. She was probably four or five days old, she had a gassy tummy, and her Daddy was tired and needed to go to a happy place, so he put on some Avenged Sevenfold. Both of us went to a happy place when the little miracle fell asleep before even the chorus.
