A Rainbow Polka Dot Themed Birthday Party: Table Decorations

Continuing in my theme of birthday parties on the blog, I wanted to dedicate a post to how I created the table at baby girls first birthday party a couple of weeks ago. I am absolutely in my element when I am party planning. This table was a weeks worth of baking and DIY and I was so happy with the outcome.

Theme: Rainbow polka dot

The table was in the conservatory and it was super sunny but there was shadows in all the wrong places in the photos so I'm sorry that the quality isn't amazing.

Confetti balloons: Ordered from Party Ark.
Birthday chalkboard: I designed this digitally and then got in printed on A3 card, the tutorial for this will be live on Thursday.
Mini layer cakes: These mini naked rainbow lemon cakes have become my party favourites this summer, the more I make them, the easier they get.
Chocolate cupcakes: who doesn't love them? I baked these babies with my favourite chocolate cupcake recipe and to save time I iced them with Betty Crocker chocolate fudge icing. I finished them off with round sprinkles to tie into the polka dot theme.
Ribbon garland: This was another DIY job. I purchased 5 different colours of ribbons, some with polka dots on it, a range of colours and a gold one to stand out. I cut them into shorter strands, bunched them in three and tied them like I used to with my school tie on a piece of strong.
Month by month photos: During baby girl's first year I took a photo of her every week for the first 4 weeks and then every month to the day and I thought they would be lovely to share so I stuck them on some round coloured card and lined the table with them.
Cake pops: It was my first time making cake pops. They are relatively easy to make, super tasty, super pretty and great party finger food. I purchased my moulds, sticks and bases from Poundland so I didn't have to invest too much in materials and I thought they turned out great. They were chocolate on the inside and I missed it up by coating some with milk and some with white chocolate.
'One' chalkboard: I got a frame, a white chalkboard marker and a piece of black cardboard and wrote the 'One' in fancy writing.
Polka dot layer cake: I was super proud of my creation. It was a one tier, 4 layer vanilla sponge with strawberry flavoured butter cream icing.

With some surprise polka dots inside! I loved making this cake.

To create the surprise polka dots I used my cake pop moulds to bake some coloured balls and made sure they were slightly under-baked. When I added the cake batter for each tin, I lined it with a layer of batter first, then popped in 5 cake pop balls and then covered with a final layer of batter then baked and iced. Next time I will be more adventurous and make a larger quantity of cake pop balls and try and get them to appear on every layer of each slice.

Let me know if you'd like to post a recipe on this.

I thought rainbow polka dot was such a cute theme for a first birthday party. It's timeless, it's fun and comes with lots of colour.

I had so much fun creating baby girl's special birthday outfit to match the theme. If you haven't checked out my birthday outfit post make sure you do. Her bespoke pom pom tutu is totally adorable!

What themes have you gone with for your kids parties?

  1. This is a great idea for a birthday party. The surprise polka dots in the big cake are a brilliant idea (although it looks like you need to be a skilled baker to get them to work well). I love the month by month photos, it gives a very personal touch to to the decorations. My twins wanted an (unavoidable) Frozen theme this year so finding blue food was a challenge!! #TwinklyTuesday

    1. The balloons are fab right? I chose them first and that's what inspired the whole polka dot theme. Yeah after 2 I'm sure they'll be chasing their themes - which will be really fun also x

  13. What a wonderful idea for a spectacular birthday celebrations. You always score high when it comes to host the enjoyable parties. I also have been using the pinterest inspirations for a perfect birthday bash for my son. His dad has booked one of the garden themed venues in NYC for that so I need to do arrangements as per the locations.
