Date Night In A Box: A Very Special Valentines Day Gift

It's times like this when I'm thankful my hubby doesn't read my blog. J, if by some chance you have got this far, please stop reading or you'll ruin your valentines surprise!

-

I can't remember the last time I actually brought a Valentines Day gift. I normally buy experiences - something we can enjoy as a couple and make special memories together. My favourite ever Valentines gift to J was in 2012. I brought us Eurostar tickets to Paris so we could go there for the day and have lunch. That's where he ended up proposing to me, totally unexpectedly, so the surprise was actually on me!

These days we struggle to arrange time away from our princess just the two of us, so I wanted to be a little bit creative and do something different for this years Valentines surprise. I also had a pretty small budget but I wanted it to stretch. I managed to come up with something thoughtful, personal and included a gift AND a date night. Although this years valentines surprise is not nearly as elaborate as previous years it is probably the one I'm most proud of. Date night in a box!

This box, my friends, has the contents for a date night. The idea is that we don't need to leave the house to have a date.

This date in a box has the works:
Entertainment  - A DVD
Refreshments  - A bottle of Prosecco
Tasty treats - The contents for our own little ice cream sundae bar
Something to spoil with - A jar of massage oil and the promise of a massage

The thing I love most about this little date in a box is the ice cream station. We do love ice cream in our house and I thought it would be a nice touch for both of us to get involved in making our own sundaes together. There's a special tub of ice cream in our freezer ready to be topped with these goodies.

Want to make your very own date night in a box? Here's how I created mine:

Materials:
1 x box
Brown paper
Valentines wrapping paper
Scissors
Glue
Chalkboard labels
Chalkboard marker
Ice Cream Sunday bits - toffee topping, wafers, marshmallows, m&m's, crushed almonds, chocolate sprinkles
1x bottle of prosecco
Coconut oil
Assorted jars

Method:

1. Cut wrapping paper to size and glue on inside flaps of the box

2. Pour ice cream sundae toppings into jars. Decorate jars with chalkboard labels.

The milk bottles were a fab find at Tiger and I have used them so many times already, love them!

3. Add coconut oil (you can really use any kind of oil that would be good as massage oil), and add it to a small jar. Decorate with a chalkboard label.

4. Write on two surprise tags. First one saying 'It's a Date' - you can add a date in if you like, and the second one saying 'There's a tub of ice cream in the freezer'.

5. Use brown paper to create sections in your box so it separates the prosecco, ice cream station contents and massage oil. This will be your first layer.

6. Cover the date night contents with a piece of brown paper. Place the DVD on top and the 'ice cream in the freezer' tag.

I know this DVD is a very random Valentines Day choice but J and I have totally different tastes in movies and he's such a movie buff, I struggle to remember what he's seen. I know 100% he hasn't seen this one and that we would both enjoy it. We are hip hop lovers.

7. Cover with one more piece of brown paper, and place the 'It's a date' tag on top.

Using the layers and the tags as hints through the opening process makes for an even nicer surprise.

8. Use string or ribbon to tie up the box and add a chalkboard label to the box.

There's many different ways you could do this and I have so many other ideas.

I challenge you to make your very own date night in a box. It's the perfect gift, especially for busy parents and you don't need to worry about a babysitter! Have a go at this one, or create your very own personalised date night box.

What would be the perfect date night in a box for you and your partner?

    1. I have such different tastes to J too, it's almost impossible to find something we both like. Straight out of Compton is definitely not the most romantic but I loved the music and story line. You can't go wrong with true stories x

  8. Love the way you've wrapped it! This makes for a great gift for friends too (although minus the massage oil, that might be a bit weird!!). We've given a gift like this and have included a DVD, popcorn, wine & beer, crisps, chocolate and a warm throw to snuggle up in. It's always gone down really well! I found your post via #coolmumclub :) Enjoy your Valentines Day!

    1. Haha is quite rustic but I like that look. You're right about the massage oil but I think it could be personalised as a gift for absolutely anyone x

  9. This is such a fab idea! I must try this for Joseph on Fathers Day! We are rubbish at presents, I hate wasting money on things like cards and expensive flowers (although he did get me lovely ones last Mother's Day!) this is a fun and cheap way of making sure we can spend some quality time together instead of both just on our laptops/iPad the whole evening!
