Home Sweet Home

I am here, and it is so wonderful. I am typing this sitting in my mother's kitchen in the leafy suburbs of Ferntree Gully in Melbourne, Australia.

Even though she has just recently brought this house and this is the first time I have visited here, it still feels like home. After all, home is so much more than a physical property.

It's home here because my family is here. It's home because it smells like our family home and it brings back all my childhood memories. It's because it has all of my mums belongings in it including some of the toys I played with as a child. It's so amazing to see Baby Girl playing with them. It's because since we've been here my mum has spent so much time in the kitchen just whipping up her magical food creations, as she does. That is home. It's because I can sit on her deck and breathe in the fresh Australian air. It smells and tastes different to London. It's because I can snuggle up with a blanket on her oh so comfy couch and just feel like I'm home.

Since relocating to the UK back in 2010, I have had 4 visits back to Melbourne. This time just feels different. My high from the London life buzz has fizzled. My desire to chase a party is not there. I realised only now that I have found it that I am craving peace. Peace that I feel like I have here. I am so relaxed. The biggest thing? I have a baby girl. She has already met some of my family and friends for the first time. I have a line a mile long of others wanting to meet her and our diary is quickly filling up. I can see just how much she is enjoying taking in the Australian life. For me, it's so important for her to know this life.

In the three days we have been here we have experienced typical Melbourne weather. We've had 2 days of 26 degrees, glorious sunshine and beautiful warmth that's not too hot and just perfect. Today we have a top of 19 degrees and as I am typing this I am watching a typical Australian downfall of rain. The type that you just don't get in the UK. Yes, even during the summer Melbourne has cold and wet days. The forecasters are predicting some 44 degree + days this summer and I'm hoping that we miss those because my skin is just no longer able to handle that kind of heat.

We're here for a month and I get to enjoy Christmas and bring in the New Year in Australia. I don't want to take that for granted though because even the time that we have been here has already flown by. I am going to soak up and appreciate every single day. Live for the present and just enjoy.

I have already been enjoying some of the Melbourne cuisine. Melbourne is the food and fashion capital of Australia and in my opinion the food scene rivals any where in the world. I have already apologised to my lovely Instagram friends for my intention of sharing my food snaps as I'm sure there will be many throughout this trip.

We haven't been without our dramas. We had to rush straight from Melbourne airport to the hospital where Baby Girl was diagnosed with hand, foot and mouth. We think she caught this at her last day of nursery. We've had some days where she hasn't had more than a few mouthfuls of food in a 24 hour period. She has been a trooper though and she is getting better every day. I'll leave the detail of that for another blog post but she is nearly back to full strength thank goodness.

I am home and there's no better feeling than that.

I know many of my readers are UK based but that you are also scattered across the world. Where's home for you? Is it different from where you currently live?

  1. Aw so happy you're home, especially for Christmas and New Year. How you describe home is so perfect, that's how I feel when I go back to the US (you're making me tear up and homesick, lol!). I hope you have such a fantastic time, sounds like you are. Soak it all in! It's amazing how time can go by so fast. Hope Baby Girl feels better. And I am SO JEALOUS of that mug of deliciousness!

  2. I can't decide what it better. Having everyone in your little patch of the world or having loved ones near or far. There's no turning back for me now as I will always have two homes but sometimes I just wish I could pick up all of my loved ones and dump them wherever I am x

  3. Shutters provide a desirable level of privacy to the house owner. Shutters can be cleaned easily, and they gather minimal dust compared to that of the traditional window shades and curtain.

  9. This is why so many Autism advocacy organisations/groups that are run by parents are so problematic to actual autistic individuals. The parent cant see past their own bubble of what they expect the child needs or should be, or should achieve, and bases good/bad on this – which always leaves the autistic child in the bad category for being different to them, for responding ‘negatively’ to what the parent administers or demands. 11. I think it’s great that you mentioned how a sloped yard would benefit from retaining walls. My wife and I are thinking about doing this. We just wish there was a skilled landscape designer nearby who knows how to create beautiful hardscapes and could assist us . Jervois Treasures
