Review: Rushton Hall Hotel & Spa - Afternoon Tea & An Overnight Stay

This summer was all about enjoying what's on our doorstep. During August, while my mum visited from Australia, we jammed as much as we could into her 3 week schedule.

One evening when I was having a sneaky browse through Secret Escapes (which I quite often do), and I noticed there was a deal for Rushton Hall Hotel & Spa. I've visited before with hubby and had the most amazing stay so at the speed of a click I booked a little getaway for three generations. My mummy, myself and Baby Girl.

Ruston Hall Hotel & Spa is based in Kettering, Northamptonshire and is a 4 star hotel. The location of this hotel is off the beaten track and the perfect place to visit if you want to get away from the big smoke for a bit. I remember driving up the long driveway on my first visit. My breath was taken away when I first laid my eyes on the building which you can tell is full of rich history. The building looks like a castle and I could only imagine the types of families that called this place home many centuries ago. The surrounding grounds and gardens are stunning.

We arrived at the hotel at 1pm and had a booking for afternoon tea. It's served in the Great Hall and is the perfect setting for an afternoon tea. I didn't know how it would go bringing along a two year old, but the time of our booking was pretty quiet and the restaurant staff were really good at Baby Girl (and very understanding of the trail of food she left beneath her chair).

It was delicious, especially the amazing cake selection which they kept on topping up! We went for the champagne afternoon tea which was £35 per person (we didn't pay for Baby Girl) and included a glass of Laurent Perrier Champagne.

After our delicious afternoon session we checked in and were shown to our room. Every room in this gorgeous hotel has its own unique decor and character. Rather than have room numbers, the room's have their own individual name. Ours was 'Hope'.

Our room was gorgeous and tickled all my home decor senses. It was light, bright and vintage with marble touches throughout and metallic accents. LOVE!

The room actually had 3 separate sections. A huge passage way as you entered with the bedroom to the right and the bathroom to the front. The bathroom was a huge room in itself with the most beautiful bath, perched up on its own stage, next to a gigantic window that looks out to the gorgeous internal courtyard. Baby Girl loved the bath so much she insisted on having two in a 24 hour period.

There is also a spa in the hotel. Whilst we didn't take advantage of any of the spa treatments, we did enjoy a dip in the indoor pool and a soak in the hot tub. We dried off from our dip over a glass of wine, laying on the super comfy sun beds being surrounded by green. It's moments like those where I just take a deep breath, forget about any of my stresses and clear my mind. It's good for the soul I tell you!

Now let me talk about the food here. When I visited with hubby 2 years prior, we had the most amazing dinner experience that would be right up there with michelin starred restaurants. I highly reccomend trying the dinner if you can. Its £55 per person for the set menu and in my opinion is worth every penny.

Sadly, but understandably, children under 12 aren't allowed in the dining room for dinner so we opted for room service for dinner. Here was our spread - Greek salad, mozzarella and tomato linguine, steamed fish and broccoli (can't remember exactly what fish it was) and chips. I don't normally have high hopes for hotel room service, but the quality of our little room service feast was great!

The room booking came with breakfast. We decided that we would spare the hotel guests an unpredictable toddler at the breakfast buffet, have a super casual morning and enjoy the breakfast in our room.

We had a little menu where we could tick all of our options, so many options, and for just a £5 surcharge on our end bill this was our glorious breakfast spread.

I'm talking cereal, hot chocolate, fruit salad, yoghurt, pastries, toast, eggs, grilled tomatoes, sautéed mushrooms, bacon, beans, juices. This was most certainly breakfast AND lunch for us.

Before we head off back home we had a lovely walk around the grounds again, admiring all the beautiful details. Baby Girl learnt that apples grow on trees. She loved running through the grass as fast and as far as her little legs would take her. And she knocked on doors. Doors that would have so many stories to tell, from centuries ago.

The photos speak for themselves. This is such a gorgeous venue and I wouldn't hesitate to go back for a third time. It's probably more suited to a romantic weekend for two rather than a toddler in tow however all the staff were so good with Baby Girl and so accommodating to her and I was glad we chose Rushton Hall for our little grandmother, mummy, daughter getaway.

The service was 5 star and the staff were all very friendly and helpful. It's the little things that make a difference for me. Sending us off for our long drive home with bottled water for all of us was one of those lovely little touches.

We left with happy memories, bellies full to the brim, clear minds and relaxed bodies. It was just what we needed.

If you fancy a little weekend away, with the convenience of a location that's only a couple of hours drive from London then I would highly recommend you have a look at this hotel.

I would love to hear if you have any secret gems that you would recommend as a place for a little getaway not too far from London? I'm constantly on the hunt for our next break and could do with some suggestions.

  4. The hotel looks beautiful. Love the interior of the room. But I don't like the fact that kids are not allowed at dinner. Doesn't sound family friendly to me.
