I Joined The Gym

If you're surprised by the title of this blog post, believe me - I am too. I'm not exactly a lover of exercise and If I'm really honest there are times where the thought of a gym session is enough to make me feel physically sick.

So over the last few weeks as the idea was popping up in my head, I kept pushing it right to the back of my long list of priorities. But it kept on finding its way right to the top of my thinking space so I decided it was time to just bite the bullet and sign up.

The main reason why I decided to sign up is the total lack of energy I've been having lately. I'm always tired. Constantly. I used to blame it on my monthly cycle. I can get really affected by it each month and for a few days during my cycle I get overwhelmingly tired. Lately that started to turn into a week and before I knew it I realised how tired I've been for a good few months.

I could blame it on the fact that in the last 21 months I've only had a handful of full nights sleep. I could blame it on the fact that I'm running a busy family. I could blame it on the fact that I spread myself too thinly across so many things which means that I never get down time, and even if I force it I'm not really embracing it because I'm worried about what I should be doing. It's an exhausting place in my mind.

I could blame it on all of those reasons but the truth is, I'm no different to any other mum. Everyone is busy, everyone has stresses. I don't want to play that card. I want to do something about it.

So somehow, the conclusion and solution that I came to was to sign up at my local gym. Let's see what a good dose of endorphins will do for my sorry, tired self. Call me crazy!

Please, don't let me be that girl with a membership that always has a reason not to go. Please.

My plan is to try and go 3 times a week and get a good workout in. Hopefully it will allow me to sweat out my stresses, have some me time and switch off - even if for only an hour. I also hope that being more active will give me the energy that I desperately need to keep afloat in this busy life I've created for myself.

I've resigned myself to the fact that I'm always going to be carrying a few too many pounds but if I can shed some more and if anything just tone up that would be super helpful too.

I'd love to get to the point where I enjoy going to the gym. I've been there before. Admittedly it was 10 years ago and was in my early 20's but it has been done and I can do it again. I think it's all about creating habits. Hopefully, I'll feel better for it and that will give me the push that I need to give me the motivation to keep going.

I'm putting it out here on my blog so I can be accountable and I'll keep you updated on how I'm going.

Who knows, I could still make a gym bunny out of me. It's never too late!

Wish me luck :)

Any of you other mummies out there go to the gym? Do you realistically find the time and do you feel better for it? I'd love to hear your experiences.

  1. Once you get into the routine of going it becomes the norm and just becomes a normal daily thing. Give it a month or so and you'll be addicted and feel so good afterwards xxx

    1. So far so good, I've been going about 3 times a week. Although I haven't been this week (third week in) so I must rectify that tomorrow x

  2. I have recently started going to yoga flow classes, gives me an hour to myself every week and I feel amazing the next day. I couldn't find enough time to justify the gym membership. I am hoping when I return to work in august I can get home from work in time for yoga flow Wednesdays.

    1. My gym has late night yoga classes, I think I might try yoga too. I haven't done it for years but at one stage many years ago I used to do Yoga every Sunday and I felt like my mind was so much healthier x

  3. A lot of it boils down to mind over matter too - you can do it! I used to go to the gym three times a week but since having children I go running outside and swimming instead as it saves time travelling to and from the gym. I also have some dumb bells and a mat to do weights at home, and I get up early to exercise while everyone else is still asleep so I can fit it in. It's the best start to the day! #coolmumclub

    1. Thank you for the encouragement, you're so right. I'm luck that my gym is only a 7 minute walk from my house so I can get there and back with a 45 minute work out in an hour. So far so good just need to keep the momentum going x

  4. Be careful, it's addictive :) I got back into the gyn when my boy was about 12months old because the gym had a great creche. I loved having space to myself and really cherished the me time x

    1. My gym has a creche too. I haven't been game to try it yet because I worry about the quality of care (paranoid mother right here) but perhaps I should try. A day time work out would be nice rather than have to tag team the hubby when he gets home from work x

    1. I tried the at home work outs and I just couldn't keep motivated and I find BG such a distraction so feeling like I have a commitment to go somewhere is hopefully my solution x

    1. It's so much harder than before kids. I almost feel guilty but then I know than having a healthy mind and active body is so much better as a parent so I justify it :) x
