Keeping Some Things Private

When I started this blog I had NO idea what I was in for.

To be honest, I just wanted to write. I set myself up with a blogger account and just went for it. My blog in its purest form was in the first few weeks before I didn't know what I know. I opened up my heart and wrote about what was going on with me. Some of my earliest blog posts were about the sleep deprivation I experienced with baby girl, my missing home and my breastfeeding journey.

I quickly got immersed in the blogging world and I remember reading so many blogging tips. One that really struck a chord with me around blog topics. It mentioned readers not just wanting to know your life story and to give them something to take away once they've read one of your posts. Growing my blog and gaining readers was becoming more and more important so I decided this is what I would do. I set a schedule for the blog and started posting baking recipes, posts on my favourite products and places and baby fashion.

I love baking, I'm VERY good at shopping and going out, and whilst I don't consider myself to be at the forefront of fashion, I love it and put a lot of thought into baby girls outfits. These are posts I love writing and in turn I knew I could share some wisdom. They were also posts that allowed me to hold back me and helped me be an anonymous blogger.

When I started my blog I also never thought twice of being anything but anonymous. I'm a very private person in my wider social network and also my inner networks. My sister in law once told me I'm very good at chatting to but at the end of our conversations, on her reflection she felt like she had opened up a lot, but she didn't feel too much wiser about my story. And it's probably true. I don't do it on purpose but there are some things, experiences, thoughts and feelings that I just keep to myself. I also much prefer hearing about what other people say rather than talk about myself. That's not to say I'm shy or don't talk a lot, believe me - I can talk. It's hard to explain but I hope you get the picture.

I'm also one of those people who rarely posts on my personal Facebook page. I don't even have a photo on whatsapp because I don't like the idea that anybody that has my number stored in their phone can see it so it's quite ironic I share so much now through my blogs social media channels. On my blog - I haven't share my full name, nor named any of my family or friends on a first name basis and I don't show full frontal faces in picture, including my own. I am fiercely protective of my daughter and although she features very heavily on my blog, I am very selective of the pictures I put up of her.

If you're still reading this post 5 paragraphs in, bare with me. I'm going somewhere, I promise.

I'm a very private person. That is just me. What I wasn't expecting when I started blogging was to find a community that was so wonderful, caring and open with each other. It makes me feel that I'm almost missing out not sharing more of myself on here and not really connecting with my readers as  closely as I should. By complete coincidence and chance, I even met a fellow blogger a couple of weeks ago and it was so nice to have a real conversation with her face to face about life.

If you've noticed. I have recently been changing things up on my blog again and have been including some more personal posts. I've been sharing my issues with my weight and my decision to leave my job after my maternity leave. It has felt really therapeutic to write things down and I have enjoyed sharing. I'm going to keep doing some of these more personal posts. I'll still do my baking, fashion, products and places posts too as I love them. They may not be so structured because in the past, I found it a little stressful feeling like I had a deadline because I always put out particular posts on particular days.

I've also decided to keep giving a bit more of myself. Mainly through some more posts from the heart. I realised, some of my favourite blog posts are ones just like these and I personally take SO much away from them. I also wanted to share recent head shot of me taken a couple of weeks ago. Want a face to my name/ blog? Here it is.

I can't promise I'll be plastering my blog with selfies from here on but this is a start.

I will still always protect and shield my daughter. I just worry about the implications of posting too much and how it might affect her later in life (probably really old fashioned of me).  I'm still going to keep some things private because that's just who I am, but at the same time - I feel good about sharing more of me with you all.

My name is Kat by the way :)

  1. I think this is very reasonable posts, these days is hard to trust anyone! I started with sharing absolutely Nothing about myslef now and change that after. I think its important to keep things private as well.

    1. Give it a go! You don't have to give all of yourself but I think injecting a little more of yourself into your blog is only a good thing x

  4. Love this blog post and it's lovely to see you. I often worry about putting too much on the internet but at the same time I realise that this is the future of our world. My best post so far has been a very personal /emotional one so I guess this is what people like to read as it's different from all the other blog posts out there. xx

    1. It's true! I do think a lot of my views are quite old fashioned. It's time to keep up with the times. I think your blog has such a great balance and your content is great. Shows who you and your family are and super interesting xx

  5. What a lovely post :-) It's lovely to learn more about you. I've only recently written a more personal post and I felt quite nervous about publishing it. I'm still not sure how comfortable I am with it but I felt I needed to let people know a little more about me and the journey I'm going through. Hx#BabyBrainMonday

    1. I think do whatever you feel comfortable with. If you don't want to go into too much detail that's OK too! It is nice to be able to share feelings and the encouragement that you get from sharing your thoughts through your blog is so lovely x

  6. I think it's a hard balance to find but you just have to do whatever you feel comfortable with. I think readers always like to be able too connect with the voice behind the blog. #babybrainmonday

  8. Nice to meet you Kat, I know exactly where you are coming from, I don't post on my personal FB page either and the only reason a picture of me went up on the blog was because I was going to Britmums. Then at Britmums they were talking about putting a face on the landing page, which I have done (only recently). Over the months I have started to include more pictures of Monkey but still avoid full frontal shots where possible. Its great being able to put a face to the name look forward to reading more xx #BabyBrainMondays

It is nice to put a face to a blog though :) Thanks so much for linking up with #TwinklyTuesday

  10. Great post Kat. I'm only a couple of months into my blogging and I would say I've probably been as open as one can be considering, like you, I'm very private on Facebook and other social media. I always appreciate the posts that are from the heart. #TwinklyTuesday

    1. Isn't it funny how blogging does that to you? In the beginning I struggled with the fact I was giving more cyber info to blogging friends over real life friends but in a way I think it makes it easier! Thanks for stopping by and good luck on your blogging journey x

  11. Hi Kat,
Really enjoyed this post. I am quite free with info about my son and I keep thinking that I will have to take my blog down when he is older - his entire life story on the internet. I guess I didn't think that many people would read it!

    1. Haha it's funny that isn't it? When our little ones grow up they probably wont even be bothered and cyber info in the future will be on a whole other level then but it's easy to worry about as parents in today's world x
