A Busy Mama's Skincare Routine - Clarins & Liz Earle

Sometimes I look at new mummies and I'm shocked at just how well they keep it together. Pristine clothes with no wrinkles. Beautiful skin finished off with immaculate make up. Hair, in a style not just a mum bun.

I felt very inferior for the first 6 months of Baby Girl's life because I there were just not enough hours in the day for me to maintain myself. To be perfectly honest I felt like a hot mess.

My skin suffered terribly. At best I was able to clean my face with a wet wipe morning and night and then apply some moisturiser if I was really lucky. I struggled because my previous skin care regime was so complicated and time consuming so I went from the works to practically nothing.

I decided that I needed to switch things up and develop an express routine that would cover all bases. In the last 6 months I have worked out the perfect formula for me and my skin has done a full 360. Goodbye flakes. I hope to never see you again. EVER!

My skin is combination and can go from really dry to very oily. I'm prone to blackheads especially on my nose and chin and I need to keep it super hydrated. Here's my secret:

1. Liz Earle Cleanse & Polish £14.00
2. Liz Earle Skin Tonic Spritzer £14.75
3. Muslin cloth £4.50 for pack of 2
4. Clarins hydra quench lotion (normal to combination) £29.75
5. Clarins multi active youth recovery cream £44.00
6. Clarins gentle peeling  smooth away cream £26.00
7. Dry flannel

I often buy my skin care from John Lewis so I have linked them all and included  current JL pricing (Dec 2015). You can shop around for good deals, particularly on the Clarins products. Clarins also often offer gift packs of make up bags and free products if you buy two or more products so I always top up when there's one of those going on.

Cleansing
I'm on the Liz Earle bus and there to stay. I use it first thing in the morning and last thing in the evening. I apply the cleanser all around my face and then wet the muslin cloth with hot water and polish the cleanser off. I love the way my skin feels after I do this. It feels so clean and soft. The two main ingredients work so well with my skin. I'm sure the eucalyptus does a lot to keep my oil under control and the cocoa butter helps with my dryness. I use the spritzer as a toner which is super handy because I don't need to worry about cleansing pads and wiping. I simply spray it on, dab it in with my hands and then dab with a dry towel. This whole process can be done in just a few minutes leaving my skin in wonderful shape and ready to be moisturised.

Moisturising
I apply the hydra quench lotion to my skin every morning after I have cleansed. It is so hydrating for my skin and since regularly using this my skin has never had that tight dry feeling I often used to get. I find that some moisturisers can be too thick and bad for my oiliness but this is a thin lotion and never feels too much even if I apply it generously. It's also is SPF +15 so it protects my skin from the sun. This is important to fight the anti ageing process even in grey gloomy UK weather.
I use the night cream after my night time cleanse before I go to bed. I have to be honest, there are some nights where I miss this step and I don't notice any difference but the lady at the Clarins counter tells me this will also help ageing skin so I shall do what I'm told and use it!

Exfoliation
My exfoliation routine is so simple. Every few days I exfoliate my skin with a dry flannel in the morning before I cleanse. This helps get rid of any dead skin. Once a week I use this peeling cream. This is something that I have used for many years and I swear by it. I have introduced this to a lot of my girlfriends along the way who also love it. You apply it like a face mask, leave it to dry for a few minutes and then rub with your fingers. The 'mask' will crumble in your fingers and the remnants will help with the exfoliation. I rub until most of the mask is rubbed off and then remove the rest of it with a hot wet flannel. This takes all the dead and dry skin away in a few minutes leaving my skin feeling as smooth as a baby's bottom. I do this before I put on foundation (which is not very often) and it applies so smoothly and looks silky!

To any of you Mama's who have your beauty regimes under control, go on! Share your secrets with me :)

On another note, I am currently writing this post from Singapore as I sit out on my hotel balcony enjoying the heat. This is a stop over for a few days before reaching our final destination Melbourne, Australia. My home town. I have a few scheduled posts to go up in December including a tour of Baby Girl's nursery next week and I'll be updating with some travel posts along the way when I get a chance. In between enjoying the Australian summer and Christmas with my family of course!
