A Day With: The Moderate Mum

Last month I published a 'day in the life' style mummy post where I documented the ins and outs of a whole day and what Baby Girl and I got up to. I wrote it because I really enjoy reading these kind of posts, I'm a little bit nosey and I find them really interesting. It got me thinking and I thought it would be fun to run a series of guest posts on the blog with all my favourite blogging mummies. I think all of us mummies are superheroes with how we manage our days and that should be celebrated.

I'm so pleased to launch this series with one of my fantabulous, wonderful, wise, insightful, witty, fun and gorgeous blogging friends - Charlene from The Moderate Mum. I feel very grateful to have connected with this wonderful chick. If you're not familiar with her blog, you should be. Not only does she offer loads of advice for any parent looking for someone who is straight talking, honest and tells it as it is but her posts will also make you belly laugh at the end of a crappy day. Some will even tug at your heartstrings.

I just loved reading about Charlene's super busy day with her gorgeous son Roscoe. I could relate with her at so many times of the day, especially the teeth brushing. Any tips?

6am: I wake up. I don’t have an alarm but no matter what time I go to bed my body tells me the day has started. I have a plan to check in with social media before I get Roscoe up but I usually just lie in bed and try and snooze.

6:30am: Roscoe wakes up. If he wakes up earlier than this I try not to get him out of his room. He wakes up a happy chappy and is content to sing and laugh to himself until I get him. Currently I’ve got into a naughty habit of letting him watch an episode of In the Night Garden first thing, this allows me to have a twenty five minute chill before starting the day. I also try and tidy up a bit as sometimes my husband goes to bed later than me and leaves things slightly dishevelled.

7am: I try and get Roscoe to brush his teeth. Sometimes he’s up for it, sometimes he wants to brush my teeth, sometimes he wants nothing to do with it – tips please!

7:30am: We have breakfast. Roscoe loves fruit and porridge; I’ll have cereal, a bit of fruit or a smoothie. I’m trying to give up coffee so I’ll have an herbal tea and then break and a coffee ten minutes later!

8:30am: Since breakfast is a messy affair I take Roscoe to get washed and dressed as soon as we’ve finished.

8:45am: Roscoe has a play and I get washed and dressed. I’ve started showering at night because I found that I wasn’t managing to fit a shower into my morning, I’m still not completely used to it but it’s definitely time saver.

9:30am: We leave for the morning. If there are no toddler groups on we’ll visit a library or pool.

11:30am: We’ll leave our chosen activity and we go home for lunch.

12pm: Lunchtime! Lunch is a rather relaxed affair. We’ll have sandwiches, fruit and yoghurt (my mother is deeply concerned about the amount of sandwiches I feed Roscoe) Sometimes I put music on and we’ll sit and eat together.

1pm: I try and keep the afternoons flexible, if Roscoe is tired it’s better to stay home. If we’re staying in I’ll mix things up by doing chores in between playing with Roscoe. Roscoe likes to help by pulling things out of cupboards and baskets!

3:30pm: Sometimes I’ll squeeze in a quick trip to the park to get the last bits of energy out before dinner.

5pm: Roscoe has dinner. I’m trying to get better at making a meal the whole family can eat. My husband doesn’t eat meat or wheat so it can be hard to find quick easy meals. I hate cooking, if it will take me more than thirty minutes to make something, it’s not getting made so I’m trying to build up my repertoire. I’ve got some good super quick toddler meals on the go – sweet potato with beans and cheese; rice, peas and poached fish and veggie sausage and mash are faves.

5:30pm: Bathtime! Again we go straight from the meal to getting washed up. Roscoe has phases of loving and hating the bath so it’s not a strict part of the routine, if he had a bath the day before and there’s no visible dirt, he can have a wash.

6:00pm: Another teeth brushing battle and then story and bed.

7:00pm: My husband and I will eat and chat *cough* whinge about the day.

8pm: I try and do something productive. It’s a good time to use for planning, if I’m feeling inspired I might get a blog post done.

9pm: I have a quick tidy up. Make sure the kitchen especially is clean for breakfast.

9:30pm: I like to read some blogs and usually end up getting sucked into twitter. Twitter will sometimes pull me into a Youtube loop.

10:30pm: Yoga time! I used to do yoga in the morning back in the napping days (those were the days *sigh*) Now it’s a really great way to wind down and try and put the day behind me. I’ll be honest this part of my routine will often get sucked into the aforementioned Youtube loop but it’s great when it happens.

11:00pm: Shower and bed. As I’ve mentioned showering at bedtime is a new move. I like having more time to do my lady business and pamper myself a little and of course I always go look at my little snoring boy before I turn the lights out.

  1. It's great to read about Charlene's day. I love her blog and am a regular reader. I'm also very impressed that she (sometimes) manages to do yoga at 10.30pm - I wish I was that dedicated! A great read x

    1. I know right? I don't think about yoga at the best of times but at 10.30! That's definitely dedication x

  3. I love the idea of sharing different mums' day-to-day activities. Charlene's is quite freakishly similar to our own - I find getting out of the house in the morning is a top priority.
About the toothbrushing, we brush together (baby boy usually wants my brush) and I let him play for a bit, then I sit down on the floor with him on my lap and brush through the tears...

    1. It's a great idea. I try and do the same but with success probably about half of the week. The days that we head out in the mornings usually run the smoothest. Oh dear! I think teeth brushing seems to be a challenge for everyone. This week baby girl is set on me brushing her you he and not her teeth! X

  5. Love the idea of doing yoga before bed! I'm a morning person myself so I fall into bed at night and have some quiet time for myself early before my girls wake up. #twinklytuesday

  6. What a lovely routine, it seems like Charlene and Roscoe have found their groove. I'm going to try out your idea of showering at night I despair at how scruffy I look getting my kids to school/preschool.

    1. It's such a great idea right? I'm going to try it too. Would be so much better than fighting to try and get 5 minutes to myself and sometimes not being able to find that until afternoon nap time x
