A Day With: Hi Baby

A Day With: Is a fun series I am running on the blog. I love 'day in the life' style mummy posts. They are fun to read and interesting to see the way different mums manage their days. I think all mummies are superheroes  We all have our own challenges with managing our lives and running our households, but we get through it and that should be celebrated.
Today's guest is Hannah from Hi Baby. From Belfast, Hannah is a mum of a gorgeous 10 month old princess. I often browse through Hannah's Instagram feed and think she just looks like such a fun person. This also comes through over on her blog with posts coveringmummy stuff, weaning, baby fashion, wish lists, life in general and more - go check it out!
Hannah's day took me right back to being mum to a baby under one. Life with a youngster moves so fast and you easily forget. Hannah sure does keep herself busy and manages to fit loads in her day. I can totally relate with the 4pm mad dash to get the house in order, dinner cooked and somehow keeping baby entertained all at the same time. We still have that every day. Any one else?
Honestly my days are changeable and hectic sometimes I feel like I still have a newborn. In fact I think the older she gets the more work is involved. Luisa is easily woken in the morning so if her Dad, Matt, is working early that week – she’s up with the birds too! That being said once she does wake up she generally follows a predictable routine of being hungry and ready for a nap every 3 hours  - although she is starting to resist her afternoon nap now.
7.30 Luisa generally wakes up around now and when I say ‘wakes up’ I mean bursts to life like a comet. She is ready to play from the get go and despite not being a morning person at all I take her downstairs and get all her favourite toys out to keep her amused whilst I grab a cup of tea.
I don’t usually give Luisa breakfast during the week as she gets so messy when she eats a bath always has to follow and by the time we’ve done that she would be exhausted and in bad form. Come 10am she is usually down for her first nap of the day. This can easily last until 1 if I leave her but I usually go and wake her around 12 in the hope that she’ll take another nap later on.
I’m actually hoping this morning nap starts to move later in the day as we’re currently missing out on some baby clubs that we used to enjoy.
Whilst she’s sleeping the first thing I do is collapse on the sofa with another cup of tea and decide what to have for breakfast. More often than not I’ll have porridge – not very exciting but tasty and warming. Once I’ve wolfed down breakfast I’m checking emails, catching up on social media, writing blog posts and taking photos whilst the light is good. If there’s any laundry to do now is the best time to get on with it. I also take the opportunity to water the plants and check if we need any groceries about now.
As I said I usually get Luisa up from her nap around noon and I bring her into my bedroom where I set her on the bed with some toys and have a chat with her whilst I get dressed. She loves watching me put on my makeup and is always trying to grab everything. By the time I’m dressed she’s shaken off the sleepy dust and is in great form so I get her dressed for the day. Like most babies she doesn’t like to get changed so I find waiting until she has come round from her nap properly is the easiest way to avoid tears.
If we have any errands to run I usually head out around 1. On Mondays we nearly always stay in the house and do some kind of activity in the afternoon or sometimes my Mum visits on her lunch break. On Tuesdays we have a messy play class in our local Sure Start at 1.30. As I said the Mums & Tots groups we used to attend on Wednesday and Friday are in the mornings. Recently we’ve been missing out as Lu is asleep and I haven’t figured out how to make her naps work around the timings. I just don’t have the heart to keep her awake when I can see how tired she is.
The afternoons can be a bit tricky; Luisa usually starts to get a bit fussy around 3 so I always try to have something fun up my sleeve like sensory playtime or a toy she hasn’t seen for a while. Snacks and baths are also a great diversion from the afternoon grumps!

If she’s going to take an afternoon nap it will be around 4. I find this one tricky to get just right, if I try to put her down too soon she gets annoyed and if I let her get overtired she’s too cross to sleep. This is the time when I run round like a mad thing picking up the debris of the day and try to make a start on dinner.
Depending on what rotation Matt is on he will finish work at 5 or 6. If I’ve had a hard day I pack Luisa up in the pram and go for a walk to meet him. The fresh air does both of us good and she usually has a quick snooze on the journey.
When Matt gets home Luisa is always so excited to see him! It’s adorable to see her little face light up when he comes in the door. She can hardly contain herself while she waits for him to get out of his smart clothes and start playing with her. This is when I get a little bit of a break for half an hour or so until around 6.30 when Lu is ready for bed. She’s still breastfeeding so unfortunately the bedtime routine falls to me. Matt would love to be involved but if she even hears him upstairs at this time she thinks it’s playtime again.

Luisa is almost always asleep by 7pm and won’t stir until about 12am. I usually stay up quite late blogging, watching TV and relaxing with Matt. I find it easier to stay up until Luisa needs fed and changed again rather than be woken from my sleep to do it. Most nights she’s back in her cot by 12.30 and I’m asleep before my head has even hits the pillow. Some nights she still wakes again at 5 but thankfully she sleeps through until 7.30 more often than not.

And then it all begins again! I love that we usually have a lot of variety to the day and I try to make sure we get out and about a few times a week. Hopefully I figure out a way to coax Luisa to take her morning nap on the go so we can start back at our baby clubs again – I’m missing the adult company!

  1. Thank you so much for having me lovely I really enjoyed writing about our daily routine and it will be fun to look back on when she's older and see how things have changed. Life moves so fast and yesterday's trials often seem like a distant memory :)
