Over Christmas I had a blog post go viral. Well not on a mammoth scale but certainly by my measures of my posts. I didn't expect it to be so popular, it was just a simple post about a thoughtful gift idea for a baby girl's first Christmas. Then it got me thinking. I'm really passionate about thoughtful gifts. It's the business I'm in, and it seems as though many of you are too.
When Baker Days got in touch with me telling me about their letterbox cake, I was intrigued. This is thoughtfulness at it's best.

Baker Days Letterbox cakes are a genius idea. Have an occasion and a special person you would like to send cake to, choose your flavour, and the fab thing is that you can choose what ever design you like. You can select any of their pre-made designs, get Baker Days to help you design something or even upload your very own photo.
The standard letterbox cake is only £14.95. You can chose from vanilla sponge or chocolate chip sponge for this price. For an extra £2 you can chose fruit cake. For an extra £3 you can even have gluten or dairy free. They really do cater for everyone.
Order with enough notice and there are many options for free delivery (you can pick a specific day) or before 2pm for delivery the next day at a cost of £3.99. You can leave a message asking your recipient to not be tempted to open it until a particular day and can also leave a personal message that will be written in a complimentary gift card. As well as the letterbox cake, Baker Days offer a range of sizes up to a large one of 55 portions. They even do cupcakes. Amazing!
With all of this information I was super excited, but I did have some questions. How could the cake travel through the Royal Mail and remain undamaged? Would it really taste fresh? I was excited about the prospect of uploading a photo, but would the quality really be the same as my picture?
As my husband J has had a major case of the travel blues (following our recent Christmas trip to Singapore and Melbourne) and he also has the biggest sweet tooth I know, I decided he would be the perfect recipient of a letterbox cake. So two days after I organised the delivery, I had a super special box come through our letterbox.
The box was really well packed. The cake came in a super cute tin and there was a little bag of goodies like balloons, a party whistle and even a couple of candles. I believe the little extras are rotated on a regular basis and a lovely addition to the cake gift.
Inside the tin, the cake is wrapped in plastic and there is particular instructions on how to remove it from the tin to ensure you keep in it one piece. The cake was perfectly formed after coming through the Royal Mail.
Now before I show you the cake. Let me share the photo I sent over to Baker Days. This was one of the first photos J and I took in Melbourne CBD during our first trip 5 years ago. I thought this would be a nice sentiment given the occasion. I asked them to include the text: Love You!
I was totally amazed when I saw the cake. Check out the photo quality!
The letterbox cake is the perfect size for 3 - 4 servings. To give you an idea of the size, this is me holding it. It's 5 inches in diameter.
Baby Girl had lots of fun with the balloons and whistle.
And the verdict on freshness and taste? It tasted as fresh as it would on the day it was baked. I picked the chocolate chip sponge cake. J is a big fan of chocolate sponge cake and this one was right up there rivalling the best. It was goooooood!
And J's verdict? He loved the surprise. He was so touched by the personalisation of the cake. I think it definitely helped combat his holiday blues (bless him) and he absolutely loved the taste of the cake.
They say the way to a man's heart is through his mouth and this was totally accurate in this situation.
I can't wait for another special occasion when I can send one of these bad boys out. I think they're so special!
