Review: The Waffle House - St Albans

Today J decided that I needed a treat. He's getting good at this happy wife, happy life thing! He told me that he would take me and baby girl out for lunch and I could choose to go wherever we wanted. I was tempted to choose The Ritz in Mayfair ;) however I settled with a place that everyone's been raving about - The Waffle House -and thought that we could take a nice drive up to St Albans on this fresh spring day. So I skipped breakfast to make sure I had ample room for my feast and off we went.

I'm glad we went on a Friday because apparently on the weekends it's very common to have to queue and quite often the line goes out the door. Queues do not agree with me, a queue outside in the cold now that's a definite no no, so I was very pleased that when we arrived there was no one waiting for a table and we were seen to straight away.

The Waffle House is away from the High St and situated in an old watermill in beautiful surroundings. Most of the seating is within a cute marquee although there seemed to also be some private smaller rooms inside he house itself.  Even though it was a crisp, cold day the marquee was well heated, with the sun shining straight through I could have confused it as a summer day. I got a good top up of Vitamin D.

The menu is split between sweet and savoury waffles with a good selection of each. As I had skipped my breakfast to keep room we saw it only fitting that we had both - a main and a dessert! I ordered the ratatouille waffle with a side of cheese sauce and the pecan nut and butterscotch sauce waffle with ice cream and J ordered the ham, cheese and mushroom for savoury and chocolate waffle with cream for dessert. Baby girl was more than happy with her Ella's kitchen pouch. Our waitress was really lovely and attentive and the service was quick but not so quick that we felt like we were being rushed so we could take our time and enjoy our little family outing.

I thought the food was delicious. The cheese sauce was the perfect addition to my ratatouille waffle and dessert waffle was devine. J's menu choices reflect his plain eating habits and he felt as though although he enjoyed his meal it was nothing special. Perhaps if his menus choice had been a bit more adventurous his opinion would have been different. He also still felt hungry when he was finished, although I didn't agree with him on that one the portion sizes were probably a little on the small side and I did not feel as stuffed as I would normally have had I eaten 2 courses.

I would say the prices are acceptable however there is a lot of charges for add ons including the cheese sauce with my main which without would have been missing something, and the cream and ice cream with our desserts (surely that's a given?). Our total bill came to £37 so £18.50 each for two courses, 2 drinks each and lunch in a beautiful setting - thumbs up from me.

I would definitely come back here again but I wouldn't be keen to wait in line so if I do I would avoid the weekends and keep it to a weekday visit. The breakfast menu looked delicious and is served until 12pm so I may just have to try that next time.
